Thanks to Kat for emailing me a question about fibromyalgia. It is a disease that does tend to vary greatly in symptoms for person to person. Everything we do with our clients with fibromyalgia is to their tolerance level. It is not good to push it too far until we see how your body responds to the exercise. This goes for weight training and cardio and stretching. Most people do respond well to the weight training when it is done with correct form, execution and light to moderate weight. If there ever is an issue with an exercise or body part, with a client who has fibromyalgia, I consult with my physical therapist who is on staff. She also does alot of Active-Isolated Stretching and/or massage therapy with these clients to help alleviate pain, tightness and/or tension in their muscles. This complements the workouts greatly so the clients with fibromyalgia are able to progress with their strength training and cardio with little to no side effects. Kat, you are also correct about cutting out sugar and white flour out of your diet. These kinds of carbs are well known for causing inflammation in the body and can trigger pain and discomfort in people with such ailments as fibromyalgia. And as you've experienced, cutting them out does reduce your symptoms. Which leads me to the next part of your question: getting results. Nutrition and exercise, specifically weight training, need to be done together and spoken in the same sentence to get results. That is why you have been frustrated and not seeing results with your exercise. You haven't been doing the nutrition and weight training together. Once you begin, it's about being consistent, not perfect. That is what I teach at MBF. We start you with the weight training, to increase your metabolism, then begin incorporating the C-REEL RESULTS: Supportive Nutrition, step-by-step, so you are able to maintain it with your lifestyle. As your muscles are "activated" through the weight training, they will gladly accept the better food choices you begin to make and allow you to burn calories and body fat 24/7.
